The 3rd International Youth Forum – Asian Chinese Youth Association was officially held by the Paguyuban Sosial Marga Tionghoa Indonesia (PSMTI) at the Westin Hotel Jakarta on December 9, 2024.
This event was also an integral part of The 11th ASEAN + China Chinese Clans Friendship Conference.
As part of the series of events, a new international youth organization called the Asian Chinese Youth Association (ACYA) was officially established. The formation of ACYA marks a significant milestone in strengthening the bonds between Chinese youth in Southeast Asia and China.
The declaration of ACYA’s establishment was led by Sultan Bakhtiar Najamudin, Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia, who symbolically handed over the association's official flag to Helga Tjam. This handover also marked Helga Tjam's official appointment as the first President of ACYA, who will lead the organization for the upcoming term.
The formation of ACYA was the result of a delegation meeting attended by Chinese youth leaders from various countries in Southeast Asia and China. During the forum, the delegates agreed to create a platform that serves as a bridge for communication and collaboration among Chinese youth worldwide, especially in Asia.
In his speech, Sultan Bakhtiar Najamudin expressed his pride and appreciation for the establishment of ACYA. He emphasized that this organization is expected to bring positive impacts to the Chinese community across Asia and the world.
“In Chinese culture, we are taught that only through collective contribution can a fire burn brightly, and the most delicious soup is made with a variety of ingredients. Just like the vast ocean that accepts all rivers, we as the Chinese community in Asia and beyond will play a significant role if we unite, combining our abilities and potential,” said Najamudin.
He also shared his perspective on the challenges faced by the Chinese community, particularly in the business world. He quoted a Chinese proverb:
"No one can catch a tiger without entering its cave."
This proverb, according to Sultan, symbolizes the mindset needed to face risks and challenges, especially in an unpredictable and competitive world.
However, he also stressed that the biggest challenge for the Chinese community does not come from external threats, such as military conflicts or territorial disputes, but rather from internal socio-economic issues, particularly poverty and economic inequality within society.
“The real challenge for the Chinese community in Asia and in the future will not come from warships or military battles. The challenge lies within our own nations—poverty and economic injustice,” he said.
Meanwhile, Helga Tjam expressed that her election as President of ACYA is both an honor and a great responsibility to advance the role of Chinese youth in the international arena.
“ACYA will be a platform that not only strengthens connections among Chinese youth but also introduces our potential and contributions to the global community. I am committed to carrying out this duty with full dedication,” she stated.
In her speech, Helga reminded the audience that true leadership is not about holding a title, but about taking real action that inspires and positively impacts society.
“Leadership is not just about holding a position or a title. It’s about taking action, inspiring others, and making a difference in our society,” she emphasized.
As the leader of ACYA, she declared that the organization’s mission is to empower Chinese youth in Asia and worldwide, with a primary focus on education and youth empowerment.
“As young change-makers, we have a unique ability to bring fresh ideas, initiatives, and passion to the table. It is our responsibility to face the challenges of our time and lead the younger generation with integrity, resilience, and empathy,” she asserted.
As a closing remark, Helga Tjam quoted former South African President Nelson Mandela, reminding everyone that the future begins with the actions taken today.
“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and the future begins with the actions we take today.”
She also encouraged all ACYA members to unite and collaborate in building a better future for the Chinese community and the world.
